There are endless volunteering opportunities that can provide excellent work experience, as well as great references. Try to look for opportunities that are available in the area that you’d like to work in. Don’t see any posted? Be proactive and approach the organization. Ask if you could help in that specific area. In today’s economy just about every non-profit organization or agency can use some help!
Intern
Interning is a great way to not only get necessary work experience, but it can count towards your school credits as well! As an intern you’ll have opportunities to build your resume and possibly learn new skills to help you in your job search.
Get an Entry-Level Job
If all else fails, and you need an income ASAP, you may need to look into entry-level jobs that require no previous work experience. Restaurants, and grocery stores are always an option, but if that doesn’t interest you, try looking into the industry that you’d like to eventually work in for entry-level jobs. Looking for a job in marketing? Dancing around a company parking lot in a hot dog suit to get business may hurt your pride at first, but it may also help you to get your foot in the door and move up the chain faster than if applying from outside the company.
Remember, while any work experience is important; try to make the experience as applicable to the industry that you’d like to work in as possible, so that you can help to move in that direction.
Ask yourself whether you have the ability to handle multi-task situation which is necessary to go ahead with your plan to seek career change without quitting the job.
First of all you must have a clear idea of what you want to do. Aim at a specific goal in the chosen career field. Instead of having a vague general dream, have clear cut idea as to what to do. For example, instead of having a desire to become a writer, be specific; aim at becoming script writer or so. Then assess the experience you had gained from the present job and to what extent it can be used to reach the goal you have set for you. This assessment is necessary as many fail to recognize the fact that their present job experience is a step forward to the new career or even a footprint to the entrepreneurial small business of their own. Such possibilities have to be identified.
After deciding on the specific field, do some basic research to find out what skills you need to have to enter the chosen field and list them out. Try to master those skills one at a time on a daily basis. While following the charted daily routine, you must be careful not to ignore your present work. You need that income so that you can make your living and still pursue the plan to change your career.
