Breaking Away From Frustration And Worry

In business – and often in our personal lives – frustration and worry go hand in hand. We get frustrated that our efforts are not receiving the acclaim that we believe we deserve and we get worried that, if things continue like that, we’re either not going to be the success we want to be or, worse, as a recent survey reported, that we won’t have enough money to do even some of the simple things we want to do.

It could be said that frustration and worry are part of the human condition – but they’re not. They are an intrinsic part of human conditioning – not the human condition itself. They are the product of the “normal” mind, which subconsciously dwells in the past and consciously is bombarded by distractive and useless thought. Indeed, frustration and worry are no more than useless thoughts.

Psychological research indicates that the normal mind is only 1% invested in the present moment – the only time and place we actually have. The same research indicates that the greater part of our mental power, our subconscious mind, is focused on what we “learned” during our formative years – the years during which our view of the world, how it works and our place in it, was constructed for us by the people and events we encountered. This is the period of our lives in which we developed our view of ourselves, our strengths and our weaknesses. This past, long gone, is the subconscious mind’s constant obsession and automatically creates our routine, repetitive, automatic behaviour.

At the same time, research indicates that our conscious minds play host to some 50,000 random thoughts each day – of which frustration and worry are two of the most common. As a result, our mental energy is channelled into dead-end streets which take us to none of the places that we really want to go in life – be it in business, in our careers or in our personal lives. We become trapped by our own thoughts.

There is a wealth of anecdotal evidence which is more than suggestive of the extent to which worrying about an undesirable outcome or event actually brings the dreaded outcome about. Florence Schovel-Shinn, in her bestseller The Game of Life and How to Play It (first published in 1926 and still a bestseller!) gives us everyday examples of the manner in which the mind’s focus leads us towards the things we most wish to avoid. And it was Calvin Coolidge – all the way back in the 1920s too – who suggested that there was little point in becoming frustrated, stating that the only thing that is guaranteed to bring about success is perseverance. Add to this the evidence of Madrid University’s business school that suggests that enormously successful business people are those who have been frustrated by failure again and again – only to persevere and rise above that frustration.

Frustration and worry have no place in your life – assuming, that is, that you want to be happy and successful. And, yet, they are with us often, peppering away at our minds, tripping us up in our daily efforts to create better lives for ourselves. They are an integral part of the way our minds work, as a result of the conditioning that was deeply impressed upon us during our formative years. That being the case, how can we rid ourselves or such self-defeating, useless thoughts?

Well, we can’t – not entirely – they will creep up on us and bite us with annoying regularity. What we can do, however, is to see these thoughts for what they are – simply useless thoughts that are a drain on our energy which we could so much more wisely invest. As a means of realising these thoughts for what they are, the development of a clearer, more present, state of mind is not only a great help but is, in fact, the most important tool we can have at our disposal in working towards the creation of the lives we really want – ultimately free of frustration and worry.

A clear and present mind means just that – clear of useless thought (when the thoughts arise notice them and watch them – like all else in life, they will pass on just as surely as they arose) – and present in the present moment. Clarity means that we can better focus on the important things that we must do today – if we allow frustration and worry to prevent us doing those all important things, then we only have ourselves to blame. Presence of mind means that we become more present to the moment – our subconscious no longer able to fully focus on formative years long gone and our conscious mind less likely to entertain useless thoughts – but, more than that, it imbues us with what all really successful people have in abundance – presence.

To rid yourself of the effects that worry and frustration have on your life, start each day by practicing clarity and presence of mind. Even a few quiet moments of meditation (there are hundreds of ways to meditate – find one that suits you) will set you off on the right track for a day of action, as distinct from normal reaction, which will lead you towards a happier, more successful, carefree life.

Time Management

Have you ever asked yourself how some people are able to take action so many different activities into their schedules while others barely seem to have the time to attend classes? Are they smarter? Doubtful. More organized? Probably. Better at managing time? Likely.

Time management is significant to any person, but particularly to student corporation members and leaders. Involvement in co-curricular activities means that in addition to classes, homework, meals, jobs, and socializing, another essential amount of time is taken up with organizational obligations. This handout is designed to provide you with some suggestions on how to more effectively manage your time.

It is serious to become aware of that time management is a personal skill; only you know your peak work hours, your attention span, and your eating and sleeping needs-which must be planned for. Finding a time management strategy that best fits your needs is important. The following steps can help you determine your strategy.

The Big Five

The five steps to effective time management are:
1. Plan
2. Assess
3. Organize
4. Prioritize
5. Schedule
Plan
Research and personal experiences have shown that individuals who set individual goals have a greater chance of success. These individuals have determined, and set on paper what they would like to achieve and how the would like to buy there. Their goals are realistic, believable and achievable. People who set goals also evaluate their progress and make any necessary changes on a familiar basis. So, if you want to better manage your time, your first step is to set the goals you would like to achieve, either for the semester, year or throughout your college career. Assess
Your next step is to assess how you are currently using your time. You cannot make productive changes unless you know what areas need to be changed. Keep a time log for three days from the time you purchase up until the time that you go to bed. Describe your specific activities in 15 minute blocks.

The activity should be detailed and can include comments. Prioritize your activities: A-important to you; B-important to others; and C-maintenance (basic human needs). Maintenance items may become A priority items. For example, exercising may be maintenance once it becomes a habit but could be an A priority until then.

Next, analyze your time log. Answer the following questions:
1. Were there any surprises?
2. Would you judge this to be a typical week?
3. What patterns could you identify in your time wasters? Interruptions?
4. What part of the week would you consider most productive? Least productive?
5. What time of the day do you feel was most productive? Least productive?
6. What activities would you like to eliminate totally? What would be the cost of doing so? What is the cost of not eliminating them?
7. Which activities during the week do you deem most rewarding? Would you like to spend more time doing them in the future? What is your plan for doing so?
Have someone review your time log. An objective observer may be able to point out discrepancies or patterns that you did not see.

Organize
Ideally, you should make a list each morning of the whole thing that you want or need to do for that day. Don’t plan out every minute and don’t even think about which task is most important, just write them everything down. Some people find it more helpful to list their “things to do” in 5 to 7 day groupings. In this way they can plan for longer projects and get a better logic of their week. Whichever method you choose, keep in mind that everyone has good and bad days. Don’t worry if you don’t work everything, just include the uncompleted tasks to your next day’s list and buy them done.

Prioritize
After you have recorded these “things to do”, go over the list and rewrite in priority order which things you need to do at the top and less important/pressing tasks at the bottom. Maintain in mind due dates, commitments you have made, and whether or not these tasks involve other people. If the items are for class, it is critical to consider how much of the final grade they are worth. How you choose to prioritize is a very personal matter. What is serious is that you are responsible with your priorities. Review your personal goals-how do these priorities fit with your goals?

Schedule
The closing thing to do is to take this list and begin to take steps these “things to do” into your schedule. You can’t plan every minute of your day. Memorize to leave room for breaks, socializing and those unexpected things that pop up. There’s no use making a schedule that is impossible to follow.

Many college students find it helpful to keep a schedule book for the year. At the beginning of the semester, write down your classes, assignment due dates and exams. Carry your planner with you if you write your “to do” list in it!

Try these suggestions, see what works for you best, and then be sure to integrate them into your learning lifestyle. Learning effective time management now will help you throughout your personal life and professional career.

The Motivational You

How does one self-motivate? Are there two parts of us – one that is the motivator and the other which needs to be motivated? Why does research suggests that most so-called “normal” people do not achieve their goals, dreams and ambitions? Why do the majority of people continue to do work that they dislike? Why does the World Health Organization believe that stress will be such a big 21st. Century killer? If you’re “normal” and you’re worried and stressed, feeling unfulfilled at work, how can you actually motivate yourself? And what would you be motivating yourself for? Why bother?

Lots of questions – but they all boil down to the key issue of the extent to which we need to be motivated – and that most of us are not! Even many of my own clients, who should know better, who own their own businesses and whose future is so much more in their own hands than the normal employee, tell me that they’re de-motivated, that they go into work knowing the key things that they have to do and yet they waste their time on doing things that they either shouldn’t be doing, or things that are downright destructive (like worrying about where new business will come from, like getting involved in the downward spiral of gossip about the economic environment, like gossiping about their competitors) – things that lead them away from their hopes and dreams. As a result, they end up more de-motivated than ever.

But back to that one key issue – the need for self-motivation and, in particular, one of my very first questions above – who is doing the motivating and who needs to be motivated.

Everyone needs to get a kick out of life – if at all possible, every day. Years of psychological and market research that most people only rarely experience any high in their lives and that, generally, it is short lived. As a result, the majority of us, so-called normal people, trudge through our regular routines wishing for and hoping for our next high – whether that’s looking forward to the weekend, the next night out or holiday. But in our ordinary everyday routine lives we are less than happy – less than fully motivated.

The truth is that there are two parts of us – our inner pure energy and our personality – and these two internal elements are locked in battle. As a result, we strive for, hope for, wish for a better life, more success and happiness, but we actually trip ourselves up in the pursuit of our hopes and dreams. It is our personality – the part of us with which we are all so familiar – that holds us back, that stops us being fully motivated, that disables our true inner abilities to achieve great things, to live our ordinary lives extraordinarily. As I said, we’re all very familiar with our personality – our strengths, our faults and our failings.

However, when my clients explore their self-perceptions, many of them find that they can actually recollect the first time in their lives when they actually felt a particular – perhaps of inadequacy, self-doubt, anxiety, fear, even self-loathing. That is because our current self-perceptions that make up our personality are merely a compilation of the events that stand out in our subconscious mind from our formative years, our childhood. Many years work indicates that we perceive ourselves to be who we think we are based on a series of “snapshots” taken whilst we were young and impressionable. In addition, years of research indicates that normal people are pre-disposed to being negative – both about themselves and their chances of success.

Add all this together and you will realise that the perceived you – your personality – is a phantom-like creation of your subconscious mind. As it is created from events that most impressed you during your formative years, your personality simply could not be the real you. However, your personality feels very real – your self-doubts, your perceived inadequacies all manifest themselves in your daily life, in your behaviour and in what you get out of life. That is why you need to be motivated – and the bizarre thing is that the part of you that needs motivation (your personality) is the very same part of you that is preventing you being all that you can potentially be.

You need to stop pandering to your personality. Ignore it (it might eventually go away!). By-pass it by focussing your attention in the here and now. In doing so, your subconscious mind’s obsession with your personality will begin to be broken. In focusing in the here and now, you will be less likely to waste your energy on the old, useless, self-defeating thoughts that regularly distract our minds from the task in hand, making the task in hand more difficult or frustrating. In paying attention to the present moment, in engrossing yourself in whatever you’re doing, you will be better at it, more absorbed, more effective, efficient, more likely to get the key things done that will lead you towards living that ordinary everyday life – extra-ordinarily.

Recent research indicates that our ability to be happy and successful is correlated to our ability to pay attention to the here and now.
