Job Training

Training is so important for everything. Think of anything you do – riding a bike, reading, or cooking. Now think of the trouble you would have doing these things if you had not had proper training. We learned to ride a bike from our parents, siblings, or friends. We learned to read from our teachers and parents. We learned to cook from our family members. For each of these tasks, we received training, however informal.

Now think of your job, either one you have or one you want. You’ll need more formal training for that, and you’ll want to keep a detailed list of all the training you receive in order to add it to your resume. Many companies are providing extensive training for their new employees because it’s proven that training increases productivity dramatically. Make sure to talk to your human resources department about any training opportunities you can participate in. This will boost your skills and show your company that you are serious about your job.

My Kid Could Paint That

If you haven’t seen “My Kid Could Paint That” yet, you should. It is a movie about a child who paints amazingly well, and it questions whether the father helps her paint (and then charges thousands of dollars for her work). Whether or not you think the father helps the child, the movie raises the age-old question of, “What is art?” In the art and photography worlds, art is given value by the eye of the beholder. That means that whoever looks the art and purchases it is the one who decides its worth. If the little girl’s paintings can sell for thousands of dollars despite the controversy over whether her dad helped her, the art community will argue that the paintings are worth that.

It is similar with photography. If a buyer will pay a certain price for a photograph, it must be worth that amount. Photographs are becoming more and more controversial today, especially within the media. Should newspapers allow photos that show dead people in war zones? Should they be graphic in nature in order to protect people? For example, should a photograph be published that shows what happens when you fall from a bicycle at high speeds when you aren’t wearing a helmet? These questions about what constitutes art and how much reality photos should depict will most likely be debated for the rest of humankind’s existence.

Alternative, Natural Medicine

Alternative medicine is a perfect solution for those looking to cure or relieve any type of ailment without using harmful chemicals or procedures. The alternative methods vary from using herbal tea to cure a common cold to going to a chiropractor for back problems.

Many medicines today are completely artificial. A lot of people are concerned about side effects of using drugs that are not natural. Herbal or natural medicines provide an option for these people who prefer not to ingest chemicals. Also, the necessity for some surgeries can be reduced or eliminated by some different types of chiropractic care, massage therapy, or other alternative procedures.

A Little Run-Down on Antioxidants

Antioxidants are power-packed natural compounds that help fight illnesses in our bodies. They attack free radicals, which are cells (sometimes cancerous) that create sickness. Antioxidants can be found in a wide variety of foods from green teas to fruits and vegetables. The best foods to get your antioxidants from are organic whole foods. The less processing the food has undergone, the more nutrients and antioxidants it gives to your body.

Ten years ago, many of us had never heard the word antioxidants. Now, words like antioxidant, free radicals and phytochemicals are circulating everywhere through the food and nutrition industries. Phytochemicals are compounds your body gets from fruits and vegetables that act in a similar way to antioxidants: they fight disease, illness, aging, vision loss, memory loss, and more. You can create a healthy meal by adding a variety of different colored fruits and vegetables to your diet. Look online to see what each different kind of food provides for your body!

Finding The Information You Need

Finding what you need and how to get it has never been so easy. There are millions of online directories and everyone still gets yellow pages, even though they are not used nearly as much. In addition to the Internet and hard copies of directories, a new phenomenon is occurring with mobile texting. With the ability of text messaging to companies such as ChaCha or Google, people now have mobile directories on their phones. Also, with mobile web browsing now available to many people, they can simply look up online directories on their phones.

There are so many times when people are driving down the road and need to call somewhere, and now they can with either texting or access to the Internet on their cell phones. Hard copies of phone books are already declining in use as more people turn to these new technologies, and businesses that can get their numbers posted in online phonebooks and through text messaging will see how invaluable this service is.

Going Back to School?

Adult education is the wave of the future. There are millions of adults going back to school every day, and for good reason. Employers are more interested than ever in hiring (and promoting) people with degrees, and they are even going as far as helping their employees pay for their education. There are programs like TAP, the Tuition Assistance Program, in which employers can pay a portion or all of their employees’ tuition, so long as the employees are taking classes that are related to their jobs. You can find out if your company participates in these programs by talking to your human resources department, or asking your boss if he or she will consider participating.

More and more adults are taking classes online, which allows them to keep their day jobs and earn valuable work experience while they attend class. There are sites dedicated to helping online students socialize, and as the trend to learn online grows, more and more working professionals are earning their associate, bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees.

Choosing a Restaurant

Food is not just a necessity for some, it is a hobby and a choice of entertainment and can be an absolutely wonderful experience or a terrible one. While some people are completely satisfied with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch everyday, some people prefer more a more elaborate and varying diet. The options we have for food are seemingly endless. We are free to buy our ingredients and cook a delicious meal at home, or we can go to a restaurant and enjoy a wonderful concoction prepared by someone else.

If we decide to go to a restaurant there are several factors that we need to decide. How much time do we have? What type of food are we in the mood for? What is our company in the mood for? How much money do we want to spend? All of these questions are ones which we must ask ourselves in order to make a good decision about which restaurant to go to. There’s a huge difference in the quality of the food, the atmosphere, and the price between a fast food restaurant and a five star steakhouse. Choosing different types of food each day is a great way to entertain ourselves while fulfilling one of our main necessities for life.

Quality Design – It’s Everywhere

Graphic design has spread into everything. Most things we take for granted as universal symbols were, at one point, designed by someone. Take the men and women bathroom signs for example. At one point they were basically drawings of a person with no dress and a person with a dress, but now everyone understands them to be the men’s and women’s bathroom signs. Another example is the plus sign used to represent health care or hospitals. Without context it is just a plus sign, but everyone knows if you are injured you can get help there.

The basic premise is that graphic design is not just about drawing symbols and logos, but about drawing meanings and instructions. When a graphic designer designs a logo, he or she wants it to be known what that symbol represents. Every graphic design has meaning attached to it, and we usually never would think about it. Everywhere you go, there are symbols that represent feelings, meanings, emotions, or anything else. Look around your office or home and notice that those designs and drawings have deeper meanings, and consider those meanings when you are creating a graphic design.

Book Review: Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts

My favorite book is Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts. I got the book from a friend who traveled to Greece, found a duct-taped copy left abandoned in a busy hostel, and picked it up to read on his way back to the U.S. He told me it was his favorite book, and it quickly became mine as well. It’s a story about travel and adventure, and it provides an insightful glimpse into the life of an artist who becomes a convict. The book begins with his escape over the front wall of a maximum security prison, and his subsequent journey to India to live out the rest of his life.

Although the book sounds like it would only appeal to adventure junkies, one of its central themes involves the main character’s love for a woman he meets in India, the lessons he learns from her, and his difficult journey to find (and forgive) himself. Pick up this book and you’ll instantly be transported to a world far from your own. Your heart will race, be uplifted, and break along with his, but when you read about his torture in prison and about the shady characters chasing him through the streets of India, you’ll be glad to find yourself in the comfort of your own home.

Healthy Cooking

Cooking at home is one of the best ways to eat healthy, save money, bring your family (or a group of friends) together, and live a healthier lifestyle. Eating healthy will improve your body’s ability to ward off disease and heal from injuries. It can also help you live a longer, more productive life. The first way to start cooking is to begin gathering recipes. Having a small but varied group of recipes will ensure that you don’t get bored with daily dinner but also aren’t overwhelmed by choices.

Choose recipes that adhere to your healthy eating principles. As you cook, try variations on the recipes and make sure to write down what works! Substitute unhealthy ingredients for healthier alternatives. If you find yourself running out of time at the end of the day, prepare dinner in crock pots and casseroles that can cook throughout the day or be heated up while you change out of your work clothes.
