With winter approaching, there are some precautions people should take in order to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. First, make sure your home furnace is in working condition after not being used all summer. Having a furnace stop working can make a normal winter week the worst week of your life. Next, check all your windows and doors to be sure no cracks or potential leaks are present. Also, be sure that any hoses or pipes you have outside are not at risk to freeze and break. In addition, check all of your trees to be sure that they are not at risk to break from the weight of snow and the cold.

Another area to consider is your car. Be sure that your car has snow tires or four wheel drive if you plan on driving through any snow. Keeping chains in your car and checking your spare tire should also be done if you are looking to stay safe. In addition, visibility in the dark winter months is crucial, so replace your windshield wiper blades if necessary. Finally, check the weather forecasts and be prepared to change your plans for extreme weather.

Building a strong resume is so incredibly important when looking for a new job or career. A resume is your prospective employer’s first impression of you. If you’ve seen “Legally Blonde” you may remember the seen where Elle gives her pink and scented resume to her professor. While a pink scented resume probably isn’t the best option for all of us, it worked for Elle. That resume really reflected her as a person. We have to make sure that our resumes reflect who we are too (most likely in some other way that printing it on pink scented paper.)

Start by looking at sample resumes online, or by asking your friends and family members for theirs. Or, hire a job coach to help you build a resume. Your resume should be printed on quality resume paper, in easy to read, conservative font, and it should clearly display your name and contact info. Next, choose how to list your work experience and skills in a way that shows your potential employer just how you will meet the needs of the company. I change the order things are listed on my resume every time I send it out in order to put the skills the employer is looking for first. I also point out in my cover letter just how my education, experience and skills meet their needs.

When I was in high school, most of the colleges I was looking at were private schools with great reputations. The only problem – they all cost way more money that I could afford. Luckily, I was able to find many scholarships to help pay for college. I searched online and found many websites dedicated to finding scholarships. Many of these sites allowed me to apply for scholarships online. I also found that my high school and colleges I was applying to both offered many different types of scholarships. There were some for success in academics, some for special skills, like sports or writing with your left hand, and some based upon need.

Even if you don’t have a stellar academic record and you’re not the captain of the football team, you can find scholarships for you. The high school I went to has a scholarship that you can only apply for if you have a “C” average; there really are options for everyone. Start by making a list of all your strengths, interests, memberships in clubs, etc. With this list, begin by searching for keywords like “science scholarships,” “scholarships for minorities,” or “sports club scholarships.” Next, start applying!

The science of touch is everywhere. When Apple released its iPhone and iPod touch, it commercialized the use of touch screen products. Never before have touch screens been as easy to use and develop. Every major manufacture of mobile phones and computers either have or are about to release a product with a touch screen. It is the new trend and appears to be here to stay.

One science product I am very interested in with a touch screen is the forthcoming Microsoft Surface. It is already out for business use, but a version for everyday consumers is still being developed. The reason I am so excited about this is because it will represent a new wave of household items that will be interactive and productive. The Microsoft Surface will be more than a home computer, but it will be a home center. Families will be able to come around these computers and share pictures and work on projects together. Hopefully, it will be the first of many science products to use technology to bring homes together in an interactive and productive way.

Celebs are a hot topic these days for many people. It seems like even if you try to not care about what they’re doing, you can’t avoid it. There are magazines and TV shows constantly announcing who did what, and with whom. I definitely don’t go out of my way to find out how Britney Spears’ baby is doing, or how Brad and Angelina’s marriage is going, but it’s really hard to avoid. Just the fact that I know that Britney has a baby, or I know about Brad and Angelina’s marriage proves that celeb gossip is almost unavoidable. We see it on the tabloids at the grocery store, we hear it on the radio, and see it on TV.

I recently saw the best Halloween costume ever; a couple dressed up as Brad and a pregnant Angelina, and then they took twenty or thirty dolls and hung them all over their bodies. It was very comical. They even had their friend dress up as a member of the paparazzi, and he followed them everywhere with a camera, taking pictures and making the flash go off constantly. They were the hit of the party.

Making Life Easier

There are a variety of services that can help save you time, money and effort. For example, I take my work clothes to a dry cleaning service, my friend hires a pet-walking service to walk her three dogs when she works long days, my dad (who is building his own cabin) hired out for plumbing and electrician service, and my mom hires a payroll service to help her run her own business.

Think of how to make your day easier by writing down all the different things you could hire someone else to do. Circle those that you definitely need help with as well as those you absolutely hate doing yourself. Next, look in the phone book for professionals who provide those services. Remember to compare prices and availability and select those that will best fit your needs.

The hardest thing about self-improvement is not lacking parts of your life to improve, but instead finding the strength to follow through with your goal of improving. Self-improvement is something that is best accomplished when you have a friend or family member who will support you. The best thing to do is to tell anyone who will listen about what you are trying to do to improve, so that you have accountability and someone is expecting you to work harder or eat healthier.

Other strategies to follow through have to do with goals you make for yourself. Many people tell you to write goals down on paper, and that is great, but they are not nearly as effective if you are not held accountable for them. You need to post your goals somewhere where you will see them and friends will see them. Or, if you are not comfortable with that, you can give a copy of the goals to someone who will continually ask you how they are coming along. That way, you can have accountability without having to tell the whole world you are trying to lose weight or read more.

The holidays are coming up, so that means shopping! I personally don’t really enjoy shopping for clothes or being at the mall in general, but I love shopping for gifts. It’s so fun to find things that other people will really like. Start by creating a list of all the people you would like to remember this holiday season. (You can also keep a list of their birthdays or other special occasions). Next, create a budget, and keep in mind that the best gifts are usually handmade. Don’t think that you need to spend a lot of money in order to buy the best gifts.

After you create a list of friends and family members, start shopping! Choose stores that have special meaning to you. I like to choose stores that have American-made products, are owned by someone I know or who live locally, and stores that handmade or unique gifts. Some of my favorite shopping sprees have been spent collecting a sampling of items and putting them all together into one gift bag, such as local honey, dishes from my favorite artisan, and homemade bread. Be creative when you shop! Don’t fall for the same old products that everyone else purchases.

You don’t have to search all over the world to find the right software for your health related company. Just start by going online. Here are a few tips. First, decide what kind of software you need. Is it a word processor? Anti-virus software? Accounting software? Look it up by searching for it online. Most companies will give you a free trial package that lasts a few days or so. Use the trial to make sure it’s the software you really want. Also, make sure it’s compatible with your computer. Most software companies will tell you exactly what system you need to make the software run efficiently.

Next, make sure to look for discounts or coupons for software, and choose companies that offer free tech support for their software products. Don’t try to do it yourself; you want to be able to chat with someone if you run into trouble. Finally, register the software with the company you bought it from so you’ll be able to get tech support, new product updates, and product news.

A fun thing to do on a Saturday or Sunday when there is not a lot going on is to make your own personal spa. Going to a professional spa can be very expensive, but with a little creativity and a little preparation you can mimic the environment. First, I would plan out exactly what you would like to do during the day. Many people like hot baths, many people like foot baths, some people like to put cucumber on their eyes to reduce puffiness; whatever your preference, write it down. Next, look at each activity you wish to do and determine what you need to accomplish that activity.

Now that you have a basic plan for your afternoon, run to the local store and get some cheap bubble bath, some relaxing music, maybe some candles, or whatever you feel will enhance your “spa” environment. Tell your friends and family that you are going to a spa and you are not to be disturbed for two or three hours. This is a fun thing to do for yourself, but maybe an even better idea would be to do it for a loved one who had a hard week. Either way, it is a fun activity.
